Chicago, Thursday, May 17, 2018: The National Independent Soccer Association announced that it has formed a committee of club owners to identify new leadership after veteran soccer executive and league co-founder Peter Wilt stepped down as the league’s top official.
The League is working with its teams and consultant Club 9 Sports to identify the next leader of the open system league that will feature promotion and relegation. “We have compiled a list of candidates with Peter’s help and will quickly narrow it to a short list before identifying the new leadership of the League,” said Club 9 Sports Managing Partner John Prutch.
Wilt and his late partner Jack Cummins launched NISA in June 2017 after months of discussions with NASL and NPSL leadership to create a multi-tier system that would connect using the promotion and relegation system used in the rest of the world.
“I wish the NISA teams and new leadership well,” Wilt said. “I am proud of the strong vision we developed and now others will need to carry it forward. I am hopeful that my stepping away will allow the disparate open system groups to unify around a shared vision.”
Wilt, who has launched five professional soccer teams in the closed system is returning to his roots the United Soccer Leagues. He will lead Madison Pro Soccer as Managing Director of Big Top Events’ soccer division. Previously, Wilt served as President, General Manager and part owner of the USISL (now USL) Minnesota Thunder. He has also launched USL’s Indy Eleven, NWSL’s Chicago Red Stars and MLS’ Chicago Fire.
NISA’s open system pyramid focuses on eliminating barriers to entry and maximizing opportunity for growth via on-field merit. The structure is scheduled to launch in the spring of 2019 with a professional 3rd division building to include professional 1st and 2nd divisions in the future.
Highlighting NISA’s push for an open system pyramid with promotion and relegation is its policy that entry to all NISA levels is free to qualified applicants with no territorial restrictions.
